Akure- Senior High Chief (SHC) Idowu Asonja has facilitated the release of inmates from various correctional centres across the state, in an initiative aimed at promoting justice, compassion, and social reintegration.
The releases followed consultations with correctional authorities and strict adherence to established legal procedures. Beneficiaries of the intervention were mainly inmates held for minor offences, those who had overstayed their lawful detention period, and individuals qualified for release but unable to meet the financial requirements to secure their freedom.
SHC Asonja explained that the action was motivated by his belief in compassion, welfarism, and the importance of giving individuals a second chance. He emphasised that correctional centres should function not only as custodial facilities but also as reformative institutions that help inmates become better citizens and prepare them for life after incarceration.
In a further show of support, SHC Asonja announced that the released inmates have been offered automatic employment opportunities. The move, he said, is intended to help them rebuild their lives, achieve self-reliance, and reduce the risk of recidivism.
Many of the beneficiaries and their families expressed deep appreciation for the intervention, describing it as a new beginning and a rare opportunity to start afresh. The initiative has also drawn commendation from community leaders and social groups, who view it as a positive step toward decongesting correctional centres and strengthening the justice system.
Reaffirming his commitment, SHC Asonja said he would continue to support initiatives that protect human dignity, promote fairness, and restore hope to those in need.
