The Asiwaju Media Team has formally petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), calling for an investigation into long standing allegations concerning Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) funds linked to the tenure of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The group said its petitions specifically requested the anti-corruption agencies to examine records relating to an alleged $125 million transaction and a disputed $20 million transaction/disbursement, alongside previous investigative and administrative records connected with the controversy.
According to the group, the EFCC and ICPC were asked to obtain relevant government, PTDF, banking and corporate records and determine what became of earlier investigations into the matter.
The petitions also requested the agencies to obtain relevant information and documents from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who made allegations concerning his former deputy and discussed corruption related controversies involving Atiku in his memoir, My Watch.
The group further asked the agencies to invite and question Atiku Abubakar in accordance with applicable law, take appropriate investigative, arrest or prosecutorial action.
Asiwaju Media Team cited the Supreme Court proceedings in Action Congress (AC) & Another v. Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), SC.69/2007, which recorded the existence of an earlier EFCC investigation, subsequent administrative panel proceedings and a Federal Government White Paper.
Atiku has historically denied wrongdoing in relation to the PTDF controversy and maintained that the allegations and proceedings against him were politically motivated, he was neither arrested nor prosecuted therefore.
The group said the purpose of its petitions was to ensure that allegations involving substantial public funds are subjected to proper evidential scrutiny rather than repeatedly denying as political accusations without a definitive institutional outcome.
It called on the anti-corruption agencies to establish whether sufficient admissible evidence exists to support prosecution and, if so, to proceed before a competent court in accordance with Nigerian law.
The Asiwaju Media Team, led by its Director General, Prince Emorioloye Owolemi, also announced that it would address the press from Monday, 7 September 2026, to provide further details concerning the petitions and its request to the anti-corruption agencies.
